Approximately 70% of seniors spend the rest of their lives in the place where they celebrated their 65th birthday. Many senior adults today desire to remain in their home rather than move to a senior community. We can secure the necessary support services needed to make the home modifications in order for the senior to successfully "age-in-place". Janzen Homes partners with Ahhh Change in Place in order to renovate a senior's home into being a safe "age-in-place" environment.
According to AIPatHome Aging in place (aka 'age in place') is the ability to live in one's own home - wherever that might be - for as long as confidently and comfortably possible. Livability can be extended through the incorporation of universal design principles, telecare and other assistive technologies. In Ontario Canada, Aging in Place is known as Aging at Home, and has received considerable financial support from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.
We are now a (CAPS) Certified Aging in Place Specialist, offering Universal, Adaptable, Accessible & Visitable Designs & Renovations for people who wish to stay comfortably in their homes for as long as possible.
Universal - Universal Design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaption or specialized design.
Adaptable – Adaptable Design addresses problems of individual differences and changes in capability over time.
Accessible – Accessible Design addresses the needs of the individual who has a disability, but doesn’t carry with it the obligation for market appeal.
Visitable – Visitable refers to a minimum level of accessibility that will allow a person using a wheelchair basic access to the ground floor of a home.
The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation was developed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodelers™ Council, in collaboration with the AARP, NAHB Research Center and NAHB Seniors Housing Council. This program was developed to provide professionals training that would enable them to accommodate the needs of people over the age of 50, as well as the knowledge they would need to modify their homes for aging in place.
Aging in Place Minor Home Modifications
Hand rails in showers and tubs to better lighting in hallways and on stairs are good examples of minor modifications. Just placing a bench at an entranceway for sitting down to put on or take off shoes, or a place to set groceries or packages can make a difference. More improvements include ramps, light switches and receptacles located at higher places on walls to avoid having to bend down to plug in vacuums or other appliances, handles on cabinets instead of knobs, faucets with single lever handles and handrails on stairways.
Aging in Place Major Home Modifications
If more extensive changes are to be made in remodeling, manufacturers such as Kohler Co., GE Appliances and KraftMaid Cabinetry have websites with suggestions, such as: counter heights, a toilet that is at least 18 inches tall to avoid strain on the back and knees, raising the height of the dishwasher so it is easier on the back or installing dishwasher drawers such as those manufactured by Fisher and Paykel. There are also drawer-style refrigerators and freezers, as well as microwaves now being offered by Sharp. Structural changes can include wider hallways to accomodate wheel chairs.
